Mosquitoes are the world's most dangerous animal, but monitoring efforts can bring early warning of potential disease outbreaks. With this kit and the GLOBE Observer app, citizen scientists can report potential mosquito habitat and the presence of mosquito larvae.
1 Ziploc bag of mosquito trap supplies (rubber bands, small jar of fish food, 3"x3" mesh, 1"x1" sandpaper square) ; 1 turkey baster + 1 plastic container/jar with lid ; 2 white paper plates (dispose after use) ; 1 clip-on cellphone magnifier (60x) ; 1 plastic tweezer ; 1 glass vial of rubbing alcohol (8 Dram) ; 1 pair of gloves (dispose after use) ; 1 shapie pen ($5.00) ; 1 eraser ($5.00) ; 1 observation journal (blank notebook) with pen ($5.00) ; 1 book "Zika zine" ; 1 instructions packet ($10.00).
The fictional mosquitoes in the Zika Zine do the same sorts of things as real Aedes mosquitoes, which carry Zika virus. Read the Zine, learn how Aedes mosquitoes live, and you'll discover how to reduce the number of places where mosquitoes can survive.
A smart mobile device (e.g., smarphone or tablet) is required to download the GLOBE Observer app.
Kit must be returned to the Circulation Desk at any branch of the Pasadena Public Library. Kits must include all items listed in record. Do not place kit inside bookdrop. Fines will be incurred for lost/damaged items.
